Benjamin ben Zerah

11th-century Jewish liturgical poet

Benjamin ben Zerah was a prominent Jewish liturgical poet of the 11th century, active in southeastern Europe. His work had a significant impact on the literary community, earning him the esteemed title of "the Great" among his peers. He was also referred to as "Ba'al Shem", a testament to his frequent incorporation of divine and angelic names in his poetic compositions.

Benjamin ben Zerah's literary output includes a notable collection of poems, known as "yozerot", which were specifically written for the Sabbaths preceding major festivals. Additionally, he authored 40 selichot, or penitential prayers, that were later published in the Machzor, a prayer book following the German rite. His contributions to Jewish liturgical poetry have been recognized and preserved, ensuring his legacy as a skilled and influential payyetan of his time.
