Charles Bernstein is a renowned American writer, born in 1950, who has made significant contributions to the field of literature. As a poet, essayist, editor, and literary scholar, he has established himself as a prominent figure in contemporary American poetry. Bernstein's work is closely associated with the L=A=N=G=U=A=G=E movement, also known as the Language poets, a group of writers known for their experimental and innovative approach to language.

Throughout his career, Bernstein has received numerous honors and accolades for his work. He has held the position of Donald T. Regan Professor, Emeritus, in the Department of English at the University of Pennsylvania. In recognition of his achievements, he was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2006. More recently, in 2019, he was awarded the prestigious Bollingen Prize from Yale University, a lifetime achievement award that acknowledges his outstanding contributions to American poetry, coinciding with the publication of his work Near/Miss.
