Mark Slonim

русский литературовед и публицист

Mark Slonim was a multifaceted figure in Russian society, excelling as a politician, scholar, and writer. His expertise lay in the field of history, and he was also a skilled literary critic and translator. Slonim's political affiliations were rooted in the Socialist Revolutionary Party, a membership he maintained throughout his life. In 1917, he represented Bessarabia as a deputy in the Russian Constituent Assembly, marking a significant milestone in his political career.

Slonim's involvement in politics extended to his role in the Samara Government during the early stages of the Russian Civil War. He opposed both the Bolsheviks and the conservative elements of the White movement, reflecting his commitment to the ideals of the Socialist Revolutionary Party. As part of the party's Foreign Delegation, Slonim attempted to lobby for the return of Bessarabia to Russia during the Paris Peace Conference, although his efforts were ultimately unsuccessful. Following a brief period in Tuscany, Slonim settled in Czechoslovakia in 1922, where he worked as an editor for the Volya Rossii review, continuing to engage with Russian politics and culture from abroad.
