Yehudai ben Nahman was a prominent 8th-century rabbi who played a significant role in the Geonic period of Judaism. His academic career began as a member of the esteemed academy of Pumbedita, where he gained recognition for his exceptional wisdom. This reputation ultimately led to his appointment as the head of the yeshiva in Sura, a position he held from 757 to 761.
The appointment of Yehudai ben Nahman as Gaon of Sura was made by Exilarch Solomon ben Hisdai, who acknowledged his distinguished wisdom and deemed him the most suitable candidate for the role.
